making corrections to your credit reference
file
If your credit reference file contains
information that you think is wrong,
there are a number of steps you can
take to set the record straight.
Sometimes people
find that their credit reference file
still links them to a person that
they no longer share finances with,
for example an ex husband or partner.
If this happens, you can ask the credit
reference agency to remove their information
by creating what is called a financial
disassociation.
If you think
a company has supplied information
about you that is wrong, for example
your mortgage is in arrears when in
fact it isn’t, you can either
write to the company and ask it to
correct the information or you can
contact the credit reference agency
and it will check the information.
By law the agency must tell you what
action it has taken within 28 days
of your letter.
If you want
to explain something in your credit
reference file, for example why you
missed a payment on your mortgage,
you can ask the credit reference agency
to add what is known as a Notice of
Correction to your file. This allows
you to write up to 200 words, which
companies searching your file will
see.
