A game of four halves

A quick way to add VAT to prices shown exclusive of VAT.

Next time you are at the DIY store, catalogue shop, or somewhere else that leaves VAT off the prices, try this way of working out the VAT:

Work out half the price. Find half of this. Halve it again. The VAT is about halfway between the last two values

There is no need to be precise with this method, especially when your halving produces fractions!

Example:

A table costs £20.
Work out half the price. Find half of this. Halve it again. The VAT is about halfway between the last two values

So the VAT on £20 is about £3¾ or £3.75 (the actual value is £3.50, so the game of four halves comes out a bit higher and helps you to be careful with your spending).
